The The Implacable Sicilian
Addiu, Bedda Sicilia, Goodbye, Beautiful Sicily
"The Implacable Sicilian" is a fictional tale, based upon true events that occurred in Sicily in the early 1900's involving the Sicilian people. Because a suffering people under the rule of tyrants for hundreds of years shaped the history of Sicily, their resulting characteristics came as no surprise. Constantly conquered by stronger nations such as the Arabs, the Normans and the Spanish and under so many rulers over a long period of time; they became an oppressed, depressed people.
In the art of brutality, there was no better teacher than the Inquisition, and the Sicilian people recognized that the only way to survive the violence was to respond in kind, take matters into their own hands and fiercely band together. With staunch loyalty, they would rather die than betray a family member, a friend or a neighbor in their own village. It was not unusual for the Sicilian male to carry a knife or rifle at all times.
Did this history result in the rise of the Mafia? Perhaps, and perhaps not, but surely was the birth of a brotherhood in which, although it included banditry, an honor existed, a kind of justification. These tendencies led Sicilian males to become implacable---not easily appeased whenever it was necessary to satisfy the day-to-day injustices heaped upon them and their loved ones. "Don't mess with me or mine" became an unspoken code among the Sicilian people.
Addiu, Bedda Sicilia, Goodbye, Beautiful Sicily is a fictional tale based upon a true story about a Sicilian called Gino who is found climbing out of the bedroom window of his lover by her husband. Terribly outraged, the husband seeks Gino with the intention of taking his life. Gino flees in great haste and makes his way to America.
